    Aluminum Gutters in Raleigh, NC

The value standard, and rightly so. Gauge is the one spec that separates gutters that survive a falling limb from gutters that do not.

Aluminum is what goes on almost every house here, and it deserves the position. It does not rust, it comes in a baked-on color that matches your trim without ever needing paint, it is light enough to hang without overloading the fascia, and it costs less than any alternative that does those things. The one question worth asking, and almost nobody does, is what thickness you are getting.

    Why Aluminum Over the Alternatives

Galvanized steel gutters were common on older Raleigh homes and they rust, particularly at the seams and anywhere the coating got scratched during installation. In a humid climate with a lot of rain, that is a matter of when rather than whether. Vinyl gutters are inexpensive and they go brittle in our UV load, then crack, and they sag between hangers under a full run of water.

Aluminum sits in the right place. It does not rust at all, the factory finish is baked on and holds its color for many years without painting, it forms cleanly through a seamless machine, and it is light enough that hanging it does not stress a fascia board the way copper or steel does. Copper outperforms it and costs several times more.

Gauge, and Why It Matters Under Trees

Aluminum gutter comes in different thicknesses, commonly .027 and .032 inches. That difference is small on paper and significant in practice. The heavier gauge holds its shape under the weight of a full run of water, resists denting, and most importantly survives contact.

Contact is the Raleigh issue. Under our mature pine and oak canopy, gutters get hit. A falling limb in a thunderstorm. Someone leaning a ladder against the front edge to clean them. Ice, occasionally. A .027 gutter dents from all of those and a dent in a gutter is not just cosmetic, because it changes the pitch locally and creates a spot where water and debris stand. The heavier gauge costs modestly more and is worth it on any house with trees over it, which around here is most houses. Ask any gutter quote what gauge it is. If the answer is vague, ask again, because it is the easiest place to save money without the customer noticing.
