You measured your window, went looking, and nothing off the shelf comes close. Or you want a window where there is currently a blank wall. Older Raleigh neighborhoods are full of openings that were never standard sizes, because they predate the standards, and remodels routinely need glass in places the original builder never put any. Both of those are custom work and both are entirely doable.

When You Need Custom

Older homes are the most common reason. Houses built before mid-century, and plenty built after, have openings sized to whatever the carpenter was doing that week. Trying to force a standard unit into one means either a lot of filler trim that looks wrong or cutting the opening larger, which is structural work.

Shape is the other reason. Arched and half-round tops, octagons, trapezoids following a vaulted ceiling line, transoms above a door or a picture window. These are made to order rather than pulled from stock. And then there is the case where the opening does not exist yet, meaning you want a window in a wall that does not have one, which is a framing job with a window at the end of it.

Cutting a New Opening

This is the part worth understanding before you commit. Putting a window into an existing wall means removing a section of wall studs, and those studs were carrying load. What replaces them is a header, a beam above the opening sized to carry that load across to king studs on either side. Header sizing depends on the span, what is above it, and whether the wall is load bearing.

So the sequence is: assess the wall, size the header, frame the opening, then flash and set the window, then repair siding outside and drywall inside. It is more work than a replacement and the price reflects that, but it is very often the single best thing you can do to a dark room. We will tell you plainly if a wall you want to open is carrying something that makes it expensive, and we will suggest the adjacent wall if that is the smarter place for it. Lead times on custom units run longer than stock, frequently several weeks, so this is not a job to start the week before you are hosting.
