When To Get Siding Inspected

After any hail or high wind event, and quickly, because most homeowners policies limit how long you have to file after a storm date, often one year and sometimes six months. Siding damage is frequently overlooked in storm claims because everyone focuses on the roof, and undocumented damage becomes your problem later.

Also before buying a home, since a general home inspection covers siding at a glance and rarely presses panels or opens anything. Before selling, so a buyer's inspector does not find something you could have handled on your own schedule. What We Actually Check

We walk every elevation and press panels by hand, because softness is the single most useful signal there is and you cannot see it. A panel that gives means moisture has gotten into the substrate behind it and the problem is structural rather than cosmetic.

We check corners, where movement and water concentrate. We check the flashing and caulk joints at every window and door, which is where most wall leaks originate. We look at the bottom course and its clearance above grade, at soffit and fascia condition, at any place gutters have been overflowing onto a wall, and at the shaded north and east elevations first, because in Raleigh those hold moisture longest and fail earliest. If hail is a possibility we look for the round dents and cracks on the storm-facing side specifically, and we check the metal around the house, since dented gutters and vent caps corroborate what the siding shows. You get all of it photographed with a plain summary, including the summary that says nothing needs doing.
