The panels under your eaves are sagging, or there is a gap where squirrels have been going in, or somebody told you your attic ventilation is not working and pointed at the soffit. Most people think of soffit as trim, the finished underside of the roof overhang. It is that, but its real job is more important than looking finished. Soffit is where air enters your attic, and without intake, everything above it stops working.

When You Need Soffit Work

The visible signs are panels sagging, warped or missing, stains or rot on the underside, and holes where birds, squirrels or wasps have gotten in. Gaps at the soffit are one of the most common animal entry points into an attic, and once something is nesting up there the damage extends well beyond the panel.

The invisible sign is a hot attic. If your attic is punishing in summer, if you have a ridge vent that does not seem to help, or if you find condensation and dark staining on the underside of your roof decking, blocked or absent soffit intake is one of the likeliest causes. We check this constantly on Raleigh homes and find the same thing over and over: solid soffit with no vents at all, or vented soffit with attic insulation packed over the top of it from the inside, completely sealing off the airflow.

Vented, Solid, and Getting the Ratio Right

Vented soffit has perforations that let air through. Solid soffit does not. Most homes need a mix, with the vented panels running along the length of the eaves where the airflow matters, and solid used where it does not. The rough guideline in ventilation is that intake at the soffit should at least match exhaust at the ridge, and in practice intake is what is nearly always short.

So we do not just install panels. We check whether there is a clear path from the soffit vent into the attic, and where insulation has blocked it, we install baffles, which are channels that hold the insulation back and keep the airway open permanently. Then we match the material to your fascia and trim. Vinyl soffit is the common choice here because it does not rot in our humidity and never needs painting. Aluminum is available where a particular profile or color is needed to match existing work.
