Cedar and Wood Siding in Raleigh, NC

Nothing else looks like real cedar. Nothing else asks as much of you either, and in Raleigh humidity it asks more than the brochures suggest.

Cedar is the most beautiful siding there is and we will install it happily. We will also tell you the part that does not make it into the sales conversation, which is that real wood in a climate like ours is a commitment with a schedule attached. If you want cedar and you know what it asks, it is a wonderful choice. If you want cedar because you were told it is low maintenance, we should talk first.

    When Cedar Makes Sense

Cedar belongs on a house where the look is genuinely the point. Older homes with original wood siding where a substitute would read wrong. Homes on wooded lots where the material matches the setting. Additions and repairs on existing cedar that need to blend. And any project where you want a stained finish that shows grain rather than a painted surface that hides it.

Cedar has real advantages beyond appearance. It is naturally resistant to rot and insects, it is dimensionally stable, it takes stain beautifully, and individual boards can be replaced without disturbing an entire wall. It also ages into something no manufactured product replicates.

    The Maintenance Reality in Raleigh

Here is the honest version. In a dry climate, cedar might go five to seven years between refinishes. In Raleigh, with long humid summers, heavy rain, and mature tree canopy keeping walls shaded and damp, that interval shortens considerably, particularly on north and east elevations. Expect to be looking at it every few years, and expect the shaded sides to need attention before the sunny ones.

What makes the difference is what you put on it and how the wall is built. A penetrating stain generally outperforms a film-forming paint on cedar here, because when a film fails it traps moisture underneath and peels, while a stain fades gracefully and can be recoated without stripping. Ground clearance, generous overhangs, gutters that actually work, and trimming back what hangs over the wall all extend the interval meaningfully. If you are not going to keep up with it, we would rather sell you engineered wood siding that mimics the look and forgives the neglect.

Cedar and Wood Siding Cost in Raleigh

Cedar is a premium material and the labor is careful work, so it prices near or above fiber cement depending on grade and profile. Clear vertical grain costs considerably more than knotty. Shakes cost more to install than lap boards.

Budget for the finishing schedule as part of the cost of ownership rather than a surprise later. We will lay out the realistic interval for your specific elevations before you decide. Written estimate, financing available.
