The middle path between vinyl and fiber cement. Genuine wood texture, lighter and easier to work than cement board, and far more forgiving than cedar.
You want wood grain, you do not want cedar's maintenance schedule, and fiber cement is either over budget or more material than the house needs. Engineered wood siding is the product that sits exactly in that gap, and it is why it shows up on so many of the newer farmhouse-style builds around Wake Forest and Cary.
When Engineered Wood Fits
It fits when the look matters and the budget has a ceiling. Engineered wood is made from wood strands bonded with resins and treated through the whole board rather than just on the surface, then embossed with a wood grain that reads as convincingly real from any normal viewing distance.
It is also the pragmatic answer on a house with a lot of second-story wall or complicated gables, because it is meaningfully lighter than fiber cement and cuts more easily, which keeps the labor line down. And it comes in long lengths, so there are fewer butt joints across a wall, which is both better looking and one fewer place for water to find its way in.

How We Install It
The treatment goes all the way through the board, so a cut edge is not a raw wound the way it is with untreated wood. Even so, we seal cut ends, because that is what the manufacturer requires to keep the warranty intact and because it costs nothing to do properly.
The details that matter are ground clearance, which needs to be maintained so the bottom course is not wicking moisture from splashback, and flashing at every horizontal joint and above every window and door. We hold the recommended gap at trim and corners and fasten to the schedule the manufacturer specifies. In a climate as wet as ours, engineered wood rewards a careful install and punishes a fast one, since anything that traps standing moisture against a board is working against the treatment rather than with it.
LP SmartSide Engineered Wood Siding Cost in Raleigh
Engineered wood typically lands between vinyl and fiber cement on both material and labor, which is much of its appeal. Pre-finished and primed-for-paint options price differently, and pre-finished usually costs more up front and less over time.
Wall square footage, story count, trim detail and how many joints the elevations force all factor in. Written estimate, product line named, financing available.
