Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, measures how much of the sun's heat passes through the glass. Lower is better. This is the number that matters most in Raleigh, because our expensive season is summer, not winter. A window with a great U-factor and a high SHGC will still turn a west-facing room into an oven in August. When you are comparing quotes here, ask for the SHGC first. If a salesman only wants to talk about U-factor, they are selling you a northern window.
How Low-E Coatings Work
Low-E is a microscopically thin metallic coating on the glass that reflects infrared heat while letting visible light through. That is the whole trick. You get the daylight and the view without the heat that normally comes with them. There are different coatings tuned for different climates, and the ones built for cooling-dominated regions reject more solar heat.
Where the window sits on your house changes what you should specify. South and west-facing windows take the brunt of Raleigh's afternoon sun and want the most aggressive solar control available. North-facing windows get almost no direct sun and can take a coating tuned more toward light transmission, so the rooms do not go gloomy. East-facing sit in between. Most window companies quote one glass package for the whole house because it is simpler.
