A gutter system either works or it does not, and whether it works comes down to three things: whether it is pitched correctly, whether it is held on securely, and whether the water it collects is actually being taken away from the house. A surprising number of Raleigh homes have gutters that were installed wrong on day one.

When To Get Gutters Inspected

When overflow continues after cleaning. When you can see standing water sitting in a run after the rain has stopped, which means there is a belly or the pitch is backwards. When any section sags or has separated from the fascia. When there is staining on the siding below a run, or erosion in the beds, or a splash line on the foundation.

Also when you have a damp crawl space, a wet basement wall, or foundation settling on one side. Roof water is the largest single volume of water that will ever hit the ground near your house, and where it lands matters more than most homeowners are told. Getting the gutters right is frequently the cheapest available fix for a moisture problem people have been quoted thousands to solve other ways.

The Three Things We Check

Pitch. A gutter has to fall consistently toward its outlet, and the fall has to be continuous, with no low spots where water stands. Standing water is dead weight, it breeds mosquitoes, and it accelerates corrosion and hanger failure. We check the fall along every run with a level rather than by eye.

Hangers and fascia. We look at hanger type, spacing, and whether they are actually biting into solid wood, because a hanger screwed into a rotted fascia board is holding on by nothing. This is where a gutter inspection frequently turns into a fascia conversation, and it is better to have that conversation now than after new gutters have been hung on a bad board. Then discharge. We follow every downspout to where it ends and check whether the water is being carried meaningfully away from the foundation or simply dumped beside it. A downspout emptying at the base of the wall is one of the most common causes of the wet crawl spaces we see across Wake County, and extending it is usually inexpensive.
