An awning hinges at the top and swings out from the bottom. That geometry means it sheds rain while open, so you can leave it cracked during a Raleigh summer shower and nothing comes in. That makes it ideal for bathrooms, for basements and crawl space walls, and for placing high on a wall above furniture or a countertop. When a casement or awning closes, the sash is pulled tight against a continuous compression gasket around the entire perimeter, the same principle as a refrigerator door. The thing to watch is the hardware, because it is the part that determines whether you still like the window in ten years. The crank operator and the hinge arms do all the work, and cheap versions get stiff, then loose, then stop closing tightly, at which point the compression seal that was the whole point stops compressing. Ask about the operator specifically and ask what the hardware warranty is. One practical note: a casement swings outward, so consider whether it will open into a walkway, a deck or a patio where someone could walk into it.
